With the state of the environment and all the toxins found in our water supply, it is advisable to use RO water for drinking and household use just to avoid the toxins and to reduce the body’s toxic burden. However, before you alkalize your water, you want to make sure you know the pH of your drinking water!!! You can test your water using pH strips. Once you know your water’s pH, factors such as one’s state of health, body acid-alkaline balance, one’s diet, and personal taste preference determine whether or not one needs to/ should re-mineralize the RO water.
Taste - RO water tastes boring…there is not much flavor to it, unlike tap or mineral water. Adding trace minerals back into the RO water, will make it tastier.
Diet – does one get sufficient minerals in one’s diet? These minerals are obtained from fruits and vegetables, grains, and some from eggs, dairy, and meat. Minerals from plant sources are better metabolized and more bioavailable. A wholesome organic diet containing a variety of vegetables and fruits (color of the rainbow) provide an adequate amount of most minerals. The amounts of minerals needed is dependent on life style. Someone who exercises, is physically very active, and/or sweats a lot needs more of these minerals than people who live a sedentary life style. Amounts also vary based on age, state of health, and climate.
Acid-Alkaline Balance - If one’s body is already very acidic then it is advisable to add trace minerals into the RO water to make it more alkaline. How alkaline should drinking water be? It is best to stay with the natural alkaline range of water; in the case of the body’s environment being too acidic, then the water should be between 7 and 8.5 pH to neutralize the acidity.
Health – some health conditions can cause acidosis (too much acid in the body) or alkalosis (to much alkalinity in the body). Both conditions are unfavorable to health and need to be taken into consideration when adding or removing alkalizing minerals to water.
In summary, there are several reasons why one may choose to re-mineralize reverse osmosis water before consumption. These include improving taste, ensuring adequate mineral intake in one's diet, balancing the body's acid-alkaline levels, and addressing certain health conditions. While there are various ways to add trace minerals back into RO water, including using Himalayan Pink Salt, alkalizing drops, or specialized pitchers and water bottles, it is important to consider factors such as personal taste preferences and individual health needs when making this decision. Ultimately, re-mineralizing RO water can help ensure that one's drinking water is both safe and healthy.
