Sleep is not separate from attention, mood, memory, or daily performance. Your brain and body depend on a reliable 24-hour rhythm, and even small disruptions can affect how you feel during the day.
A recent animal study raises an important question: Could changes in sleep and activity patterns continue after methylphenidate treatment has been discontinued?
Researchers at California State University, San Bernardino studied 108 male and female Long-Evans rats. Some rats were adolescents, while others were adults. The animals received either a control solution or methylphenidate twice daily for 10 days.
The researchers then monitored activity and rest patterns at three points:
The monitors recorded movement across the animals’ light and dark cycles. Because rats are nocturnal, they are generally active during the dark phase and rest during the light phase.
While the animals were receiving methylphenidate, the researchers observed increased activity across portions of the 24-hour cycle. Some adult rats had longer and more frequent active periods during their usual waking phase, while female rats showed signs of less-restful and more fragmented rest during their normal resting phase.
The first day after treatment ended brought additional changes. Some animals experienced shorter, more interrupted rest periods. Rest fragmentation means that periods of stillness are repeatedly interrupted by movement or arousal, making rest less continuous.
The most notable findings appeared 10 days after discontinuation. Across the age and sex groups, the treated rats showed reductions in the average duration of their rest episodes and changes in the overall quality of rest. In simple terms, the animals appeared to have more difficulty maintaining consolidated rest, even after the treatment period had ended. 💤
The researchers also observed temporary changes in the timing of daily activity rhythms. These daily rhythms are often called circadian rhythms, which are the internal timing patterns that help coordinate sleep, wakefulness, hormones, body temperature, and other functions.
Sleep is more than the number of hours spent in bed. Rest must also be sufficiently continuous and restorative.

Important limitation: This study does not prove that people who stop methylphenidate will experience the same lasting sleep changes. The research was performed in rats that did not have ADHD, and the scientists measured movement-based rest rather than sleep stages through brain-wave recordings. Human sleep is more complex, and people can respond differently based on age, health history, dosage, duration of treatment, sleep habits, stress, nutrition, and other factors.
This research is a reminder to look at the entire 24-hour picture when attention, focus, mood, or energy changes. Daytime challenges and nighttime sleep are closely connected. A person may notice difficulty concentrating, irritability, fatigue, or brain fog without immediately recognizing that disrupted sleep quality or circadian timing may be contributing.
If sleep changes after a treatment plan is adjusted, keep a simple record of bedtime, time to fall asleep, nighttime awakenings, morning energy, daytime alertness, and caffeine intake. This information can help you have a more productive conversation with the healthcare professional overseeing your care.
Do not stop or change a prescribed treatment plan without discussing it with the prescribing professional. Any transition should be individualized and monitored, especially when sleep, mood, attention, or daily functioning are affected.

This study suggests that repeated methylphenidate exposure may alter rest and activity patterns in rats, with some disruptions becoming more pronounced 10 days after discontinuation. The findings are important for future research, but they should not be interpreted as proof that the same effects occur in every person.
