Say Goodbye To Chronic Painful Movement With The ATM2 and Laser

Posted by Dr. Karl R.O.S. Johnson, DC on Sun, Aug 04, 2013

So many patients with fibromyalgia, chronic thyroid conditions, disc herniations, sciatica, and chronic neck pain often find blessed relief with the help of a unique medical device named the ATM2 and Cold Laser.

Darren SICU BLOGAt the time of writing this article, I am sitting in the surgical ICU at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. My oldest son, Darren was in a bicycle accident the evening before. After his wounds heal and his facial fractures are surgically repaired and the injury to his neck is sufficiently stable, he will be a candidate for some chiropractic care and specialized neurological cranial work called Neuro-Cranial Integration. Combined with specialized nutritional help to aid in the healing of his soft tissues and brain, as well as prayers for healing from friends, family, patients and readers, we expect a positive outcome.

Getting emergency medical help as soon as possible after an injury is commonplace in the United States. Seeking out help for the underlying spinal and neurological injuries that are less apparant, yet as important in the long run, is very underutilized by the general population.

Unfortunately for many, the lack of understanding of why it's important to get a proper chiropractic and functional neurological examination, contributes to factors involved in the development of chronic pain.

Most of the patients I see with chronic painful movement have a history of an injury they have almost forgotten about. With encouragement, the memory of the injury finally is recalled as having occurred a decade or so earlier.

The patient's examination typically shows focal degenerative changes in the injured part of their spine (or other joint) along with evidence of fibrotic muscles in the surrounding area (fibrosis is the medical term that means scar tissue). Scar tissue is the body's way to repair an injured area when there is prolonged inflammation. If treatment intervention is swift and aimed at reducing inflammation, less scar tissue forms.

As I learned from Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, MD, and repeatedly observed in my practice, scars from past injuries or surgeries have consistently been found to cause hidden disturbances to the normal functioning of the body. Whether these are close to the organ or tissue in trouble, or distant (as in a knee scar connected to a frozen shoulder), these need to be properly and thoroughly handled whenever they show up in our system of testing in order to attain optimal results.

Scientific research has demonstrated that any area of the skin that heals by scar formation has increased sympathetic nerve enervation. These scars can sometimes suddenly “activate” (even years after they were caused) and act as capacitors which accumulate nervous energy, and which can then mis-fire at will, affecting local areas or ganglia which can then affect other areas away from the scar site.

Normally emergency care is focused on life support and comfort. Stages Of HealingAfter those important details are attended to, the next important phase of treatment should begin as soon as possible to reduce the likelyhood of chronic pain development.

One of the tools I use at Johnson Chiropractic Neurology & Nutrition is the use of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), also known as cold laser. LLLT helps increase the production of the energy molecule, called ATP, in the injured tissue. When you increase ATP, you increase the speed at which healing occurs.

Another device I use is called the ATM2. This is one of my favorite therapeutic tools because it helps retrain the brain to send the proper signals to the muscles around the injured area of the back, neck, hips, or shoulders. With the proper signals the patient who previously had painful movment, now enjoys pain free or nearly pain-free movement. I am excited to update my clinical skills on this device at an upcoming hands-on advanced training program in San Jose  Below you can watch a short before and after video of one of my former patients who had years of back pain, due to a herniated disc. Previous treatment methods from other practictioners were not effective in helping her eliminate pain.

Because of all the continuing education I have received and continue to take, I have many tools availale to help people tackle their chronic painful movment. You can read more about the various methods and modalities on this page of my site.

Keep in mind that there is no process that does not require time, and this is especially true when someone has a chronic problem. There are many layers of issues that have to be dealt with; physical and emotional. To witness the transformation of a chronic patient from day one when they are an emotional and physical wreck to the day when they proclaim their physical and emotional freedom from pain is rewarding beyond measure. I often find my eyes well up with tears at these times.

I pray you find comfort in your journey to wellness!
