ADD - Type 5

Here we are, already, at part five in the series of articles where I explain some of the details of the seven types of ADD. Type 5 is also called Limbic ADD. This type of ADD is where depression and ADD intersect each other. The core ADD symptoms are present with the additional symptoms of negativity, moodiness, sadness, low energy, lower motivation and a decreased zest for living. Typically, we want our cognitive areas of the brain to have increased activity and our emotional  center to be less active, which will create a generally positive, more hopeful, centered state of mind. In Limbic ADD, as this emotional area of our brain (limbic area) increases in activity, we tend to develop a more negative outlook on life.

"Limbic ADD is often responsible for failed marriages. The low sexual interest, tiredness, feelings of being constantly overwhelmed, and lack of attention to detail often cause marital conflict. Treating Limbic ADD can literally save families and change a person’s life." [1]

As with all the other ADD types, a we correlate the patient's qEEG findings with their clinical history. To be accurate in our evaluation, when we see negativity, low motivation, low energy, depression, which is common in Type 5 ADD, correlating history and brain map (QEEG) results will assist with correct ADD/ADHD classification.

Limbic (emotional) Area

The limbic area or system is one of the older parts of our brain, evolutionarily. Now the limbic area of our brain contains several components, namely; the amygdala, hippocampus, thalamus, hypothalamus, basal ganglia, and cingulate gyrus. These structures form a complex network for controlling emotion, bonding with others and affecting our social connectedness. The sense of smell also "lives" in this area. We all know how smells can trigger emotions. The outer areas of our brain (cerebral cortex) are the "newer" areas and give us the capacity to perform problem solving, planning, organization, thinking rationally and being able to control our emotions.

Brain research reveals that females on average, tend to have larger limbic systems that males. "This gives females several advantages and disadvantages. Due to the larger deep limbic brain, women are more in touch with their feelings and are generally better able to express their feelings than men. Having a larger deep limbic system leaves a female somewhat more susceptible to depression, especially at times of significant hormonal changes such as the onset of puberty, before menses, after the birth of a child, and at menopause." [2]

Notable attributes of Type 5 ADD*
  • Moodiness
  • Negativity
  • Low energy
  • Frequent irritability
  • Tendency to be socially isolated
  • Frequent feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, or excessive guilt
  • Lowered interest in things that are usually considered fun
  • Sleep changes (too much or too little)
  • Chronic low self-esteem

HELPFUL TREATMENT TIPS

In Type 5 cases we work with supplements that boost the brain's production of dopamine. "Dopamine is the neurotransmitter involved in motivation, emotional significance, relevance, focus, and pleasure. It helps you get things done. Foods that tend to increase dopamine include beef, poultry, fish, eggs, seeds (pumpkin and sesame), nuts (almonds and walnuts), cheese, protein powders, and green tea. In addition, avocados and lima beans can help. Simple carbohydrates tend to deplete dopamine." [3] Of course, as with the other types of ADD, exercise is very important as it increases dopamine levels along with improving blood supply to the brain. The great thing is even non-strenuous exercise can help increase dopamine

Supplements that can help improve dopamine for the Type 5 ADD paient include:

  • Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxal 5'-phosphate)
  • Selenium (as L-selenomethionine)
  • Velvet Beans Extract (Mucuna Prurians Extract (seed)
  • DL-Phenylalanine
  • Beta Phenylalanine (as beta-Phenylthylamine HCI)
  • N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine
  • N-Acetyl L-Cysteine
  • S-Adenosyl-Methionine (SAMe).

Type 5 Limbic ADD cases typically respond very well to a individualized program of nutritional support and brain-based therapy consisting of neurofeedback (brain wave retraining), heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback , and Interactive Metronome. Remember, brain maps help find the cause of ADHD. Neurofeedback can often correct the problem.
