What is Glutathione?

Some of you reading this blog may not be familiar with glutathione.  Also called GSH, Glutathione is the most powerful, prevalent antioxidant in your body.  The most well-known antioxidants are vitamins C and E.  Glutathione is a tripeptide molecule composed of the amino acids; glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine, which exists in almost every cell of your body.  Our glutathione level actually indicates our state of health and can predict longevity.  Scientific evidence has found that glutathione is needed by our body to enhance the immune system response.  There are more than 60,000 published papers on the beneficial effects of glutathione replacement, unfortunately, it is still largely ignored by mainstream medicine.  Normal glutathione levels are important for good health because they neutralize free radicals, which can build up in cells and cause damage.

The main thing you want to really understand about glutathione is that it is something that our body makes all throughout our cells and our tissues. Glutathione has many functions. One of the main functions is it’s an antioxidant, so it protects against free radicals. Free radicals destroy tissues when we have an inflammatory response. Glutathione is a mighty warrior for our body and you will want to know more about this amazing chemical.

The Good News!... Research shows that increasing your Glutathione levels has the following benefits:

  • Increase Your Energy*

  • Slow Down the Aging Process*

  • Detoxify Your Body and Improve Liver Function*

  • Reduce the Risk of Cancer*

  • Strengthen Your Immune System*

  • Improve Mental Function and Clarity*

  • Fight Inflammation on Organs and Muscles*

  • Improve Heart and Lung Function*

Uncontrolled inflammation is a root cause of most major health issues ranging from heart conditions to joint and muscular conditions.  Abundant glutathione levels will off-set the effects of this inflammation at the cellular level.  Because glutathione is in every cell, it can regulate inflammation throughout the body.

Adding antioxidants to your diet is a tremendous help, but it is Glutathione… the world’s most powerful natural antioxidant – that is Most Important for Protecting Healthy Cells.

Glutathione and The Immune Sytem

The other key thing about glutathione is that it is an important immune modulator. So the most
important cells for autoimmunity are regulatory T-cells. And regulatory T-cells modulate the
expression of autoimmune diseases, how active it is, if the autoimmune disease goes into relapse or remission. Regulatory T-cells of the immune system have lots of receptors for glutathione. So, glutathione has a direct effect on these regulatory T-cells. And therefore, not only is it an
antioxidant, but it's also a very powerful immune modulator.

Glutathione Helps Convert Toxins to Safe Substances

The other key thing that glutathione does is it is involved in what is called phase II biotransformation. Biotransformation is a medical term that refers to ability to take compounds that are toxic or pollutant substances and then convert them into an end product that the body can eliminate with harm to the body.

Biotransformation is mainly done through what is called the phase I and phase II pathways in the liver. We also have enzymes in the microbiome that do that. When we get exposed to certain pollutants like in air pollution or pollutants in our environment. Glutathione plays a role for some substances to help clear them out of our body.

So,  if you can take a big step back and take a look at glutathione, glutathione does a lot of really
amazing things. It's a very powerful antioxidant, it supports the respiratory immune cells and
helps with biotransformation pathways.

What Happens When You Have a Glutathione Deficiency?

Studies reveal glutathione deficiency is a key factor in causing neurodegeneration. Glutathione is depleted with all types of  inflammatory conditions.

Whether it's from  an upper respiratory infection or a gastrointestinal infection or whether it's oxidative stress from radiation,  or whether it is an autoimmune disease, the glutathione levels in our body get depleted when there's a chronic inflammatory state, and that's pretty much the role of antioxidants.

AdobeStock_How_Antioxidants_Reduce_Free_Radicals-blogWhen we get chronic levels of inflammation, the inflammation starts to create free radicals and free radicals destroy our tissues. And one of the things that glutathione does is it basically helps with electron transfers, so it neutralizes the free radical so it doesn't destroy tissues.

Now the other interesting things about glutathione are that glutathione levels — the production of the enzymes that are used to make glutathione — the total levels of glutathione we have go down by every decade. So the glutathione levels we have have when we are 10 are different levels than at 20 and 30, and 40 and 50. As we get older our glutathione levels tend to go down as with most antioxidant systems.

Did you know that the average 45 year old has already experienced a 50% reduction in glutathione?  Glutathione is a molecule our bodies produce naturally to cleanse free radicals and toxins from our system. So if our bodies produce glutathione naturally, why supplement, right?

Our world is filled with toxins. Everything from the food we eat, clothes we wear, even the air we breathe has our bodies working overtime to fight off damage and replenish our cells. To further the problem, as we age our glutathione levels fall. This makes our bodies extremely susceptible to breakdown and disease.

By now most of us know someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.  Unfortunately, most us also know of someone who has died or have lost someone we love to COVID-19.  I wanted to share this research paper  with you as it explains the relation between glutathione deficiency and serious manifestations and even death in COVID-19 patients.

Increasing Glutathione In Your Body

Glutathione has been a celebrity secret to help prevent aging, obesity, cancer, heart disease, dementia, joint pain, and more.  The problem is that glutathione was only, initially, effectively available through injections.

Fortunately for several years now, glutathione is available in a highly absorbable form in a specially formulated nutritional supplement. Researchers have found that emulsified liquid forms of glutathione to be a superior method of absorption, since typically glutathione is not well absorbed in the digestive tract.

Features of the product I recommend:

  • Supports cellular immune function

  • A must-have supplement through the winter months

  • Prepared in a proprietary liposomal process

  • Gives the body three ways to increase glutathione levels
