Natural ADHD Treatments - How Do Brainwaves Work?

shutterstock_547301161.jpgTo understand how natural ADHD treatments can help reduce the ravages of ADD and or ADHD, we must first explore the workings of the brain associated with brainwaves. Importantly, the brain is a very complex, electrochemical organ that dominates our bodies and as such we know comparatively little about how the brain functions. Scientists are always discovering more and more aspects to this marvelous organ. However, what we do know, in relation to ADD and ADHD, is that variances in the brainwave patterns can facilitate the symptoms of this disorder. Therefore, to understand how natural ADHD treatments can help, you must first understand a little how brainwaves work.

What Are Brain Waves?

There are six different types of brainwaves and each corresponds to a frequency range, measured in cycles or Hertz. The six different types are:

  • Infra-Low
  • Delta
  • Theta
  • Alpha
  • Beta
  • Gamma

Infra-Low brainwaves are those that exist in the .5Hz and lower range and are also called Slow Cortical Potentials. These do not typically carry the same type of information as the other waves and can be compared to timing signals in your home computer. These waves are also very slow and difficult to detect and thus these are not studied extensively as those waves that are known to transmit information.

Delta Waves (.5Hz to 3Hz)

While both Alpha waves and Beta waves can occur while you are conscious, Delta waves are those that typically occur during dreamless sleep. These are low frequency but are high intensity and this is why getting a good sleep is necessary as the Delta waves help promote health and stimulate regeneration of our body cells and tissues.

Theta Waves (3Hz to 8Hz)

These brainwaves occur in deep sleep or deep meditation and they function as a pathway to our learning and memory.

Alpha Waves (8Hz to 12Hz)

When you are in a relaxed, calm, state, your brain generally produces Alpha waves. These are the so-called resting state of your mind. Thoughts flowing calmly etc. These waves are associated with increased focus and learning capability and help with overall mental coordination.

Beta Waves (12Hz to 38Hz)

Beta Waves are your normal conscious mind. These waves are generated for decision making, information processing, focus, attention and more. Divided into three blocks of waves, these waves are the ones you produce most of the time when you are awake.

Gamma Waves (38Hz to 42Hz)

Finally, we come to Gamma Waves. These high-frequency waves are high-level processing waves. They pass information quickly and with a high intensity and as of yet, there is not a complete understanding of the role Gamma waves play. There are some studies the suggest that these are related to neuronal firings but further research is needed.

How Natural Treatments Work For You

These waves can be adjusted by the state of mind you are in or what pictures or sounds you see and hear. Natural ADHD treatments, such as neurofeedback, help you train your mind to produce specific patterns to the waves listed above so you can control the symptoms. This can lead to better or more enhanced learning potential, better habits with concentration and focus and a whole lot more. Either combined with multiple treatments or used as a single therapy, these treatments can help you with managing your disorder.

While not a cure, Natural, Alternative, ADD and ADHD treatments have been proven effective at helping those that suffer from ADD and ADHD and other disorders get their quality of life back. Working with a therapy provider that has the experience in providing quality, natural, alternative treatments is a first step in moving past the ravages of ADD and ADHD and marching towards your future. One in which you have the control. So, if you or someone you know suffer from ADHD or ADD, talk to a provider today.
