The Worst Alternative Medical Treatments to Treat ADD and ADHD

Posted by Dr. Karl R.O.S. Johnson, DC on Tue, Jan 24, 2017

shutterstock_548529760.jpgMeds, therapies, treatments, oh my! The reality is that there isn't truly a "worst alternative medical treatment" for ADD or ADHD. Naturally, some treatments will be less effective than others, or some will be effective for some time then suddenly no longer work. This is the same for alternative treatments as it is for traditional medicinal treatments. To put it succinctly, no treatment is perfect, and each and every case is different even if only subtly different. Therefore, to find what works you should partner with a provider that will work beside you to develop the treatment that is right for your specific circumstance.

No Good Or Bad Treatments

When providing alternative medical treatments, it is actually a disservice to consider a treatment as good or bad. Treatments range in effectiveness based on a wide range of circumstances and factors that are often outside the control of any individual, be it provider or patient. Therefore, considering a treatment bad or good honestly doesn't address such differing circumstances between individuals. It would be fairer to say that some treatments are more effective for some individuals while others might be more effective in opposite circumstances. This is further enhanced when you consider that often different treatment regimes are used simultaneously and thus are expanding the potential differential factors.

Getting The Right Treatment

While there may be no good or bad treatments, there are certainly correct treatments or more appropriately the correct application of the right treatment. Both alternative medical treatments and standard medical treatments require a bit of fine-tuning to provide the highest opportunity for the best possible results. For example; One of the best treatment options for ADD and ADHD, Neurofeedback, require establishing a baseline, using a brain map or qEEG, even before the actual process of applying the treatments begins. Over time, this baseline has to be retaken to adjust for the changes that have occurred due to any prior successful treatments. Thus fine-tuning the treatment options.

Managing Expectations

Ultimately, any treatment has a part that is effectively managing expectations. All procedures take the time to become effective and often many take even longer to prove their effectiveness as a whole and this certainly applied to alternative medical treatments as well. There is nothing wrong with having hope that a specific treatment will be a success or that you might find relief with treatment but you have to be realistic about the expectations and outcomes. The best way to manage your expectations is by working and partnering with your provider to help set reasonable goals and expectations with clear milestones. Also, an important aspect of managing your expectations with any treatment is to realize that failure is part of that process as well and it is ok to allow yourself to make mistakes. It takes time and it takes effort but properly managing your expectations means your disappointment will be short lived and you will be on to success in no time.

Dealing with the challenges presented by ADD or ADHD can be significant without the confusion of the different treatment options. What is important is the discovery of a treatment provider that is willing and able to partner with you to help you select the treatment options that is right for your circumstances. It may only take one option, or it might require all the available options, regardless, your provider can help you and work with you every step of the way to help you get to the quality of life you expect and deserve. If you or someone you know must continually face the challenges and difficulties of ADD or ADHD, contact a provider today and start on the road to meeting and beating those challenges.
