Natural ADHD Treatment-Setting Expectations

AdobeStock_Boy-and-Girl-Student-1100.jpegWith so many options in this day and age it can be difficult to find a beneficial and natural ADD/ADHD treatment for your child. Medications, therapies, treatments, they are all over the place! In reality there is not a “worst alternative medical treatment” for ADD or ADHD. Naturally some treatments may be less effective than others, or what treatments work at first may wear off. The same theory applies to alternative treatments. To be specific, no treatment is perfect for everyone, each and every case is different in some way. Therefore, to find what does work you should find a provider that will work best for your child to develop care options specific to their needs and goals. In other words, treat the person not the diagnosis.

Good or Bad?

When providing alternative medicine treatments, it is actually a disservice to consider a treatment as good or bad. Effectiveness ranges in treatments based on a large variety of circumstances and factors that are often out of the hands of the individual. Therefore, considering a treatment as bad or good honestly doesn’t address such differing circumstances between individuals. It would be more fair to state that some treatments are more effective for some individuals while others may be more effective in some circumstances. This is where a well seasoned physician comes into play. Working with someone who understands individual variability and has worked with a wide variety of treatment options in the past. The treating physician should also have a system in place to monitor progress and a willingness to update the care prescription as necessary to ensure goals are met.

The Right Treatment

Yes, there are no good or bad treatments, however, there are correct treatments, more specifically the correct application of the right treatment. Both alternative medical treatments and standard medical treatments require a bit of fine tuning for the best possible results.

For example, one of the best treatment options for ADD and ADHD, Neurofeedback, requires an establishment of a baseline, developed from a brain map and neurologic evaluation, before the actual process of applying the treatments begins. Over time, this baseline has to be retaken as the brain adjusts due to prior successful treatments.

Managing Expectations

Ultimately, every treatment requires effectively managing expectations. Care is a process that takes time to demonstrate improvements. This applies to alternative medicine treatments as well. There is nothing wrong with hoping a certain treatment option will be successful or your child might find relief from the treatment but you have to be realistic about the expectation and outcome. The best way to do this is with your treatment provider that will help set up reasonable goals and expectations with clear milestones.

Also an important part of managing expectations with any treatment is to realize that failure is part of the process. It takes time and it takes effort and properly managing your expectations will ensure for a smoother road to healing and success.

Dealing with the challenges of ADD and ADHD can be a large mountain to climb alone. It is easier to understand the different treatment options and walk up the mountain with a seasoned treatment provider. Your provider will work with you every step of the way ensuring that you and your child reach the quality of life you desire.
