Management of chronic pain is one of the main reasons many people seek out chiropractic care. According to a National Institutes of Health Study in 2011, 76 million Americans are in chronic pain. The traditional care methods include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or opioids. Of course, these do bring a level of relief, but many also bring a level of risk for dangerous side effects.
In recent years, there has been a major upswing in interest for managing pain using natural methods, away from the risk of dangerous side effects or addiction. Chiropractic techniques promote the body’s ability to self-heal and promote recovery, not simply hiding the symptoms.
Yet, during treatment, patients will see stronger results if they can manage their pain and healing outside of the office.
Many aspects of chronic pain can be assisted or managed through gentle lifestyle changes like light exercise, weight loss, or dietary changes. While these suggestions are highly encouraged, they can be further improved with natural supplementation.
NATURAL SUPPLEMENTS FOR PAIN MANAGEMENT
Three supplements we often recommend to patients with chronic pain to help alleviate their inflammation are curcumin and full-spectrum hemp oil and a combination product the contains full-spectrum hemp oil, broccoli sprout concentrate and calamari oil.
- Liquid form — convenient, flexible dosing with a graduated dropper
- Non-genetically engineered hemp
There are many types of phytocannabinoids found in full-spectrum hemp oil. One highly publicised one is CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid derived from the hemp plant. It interacts with the endocannabinoid system to promote a homeostatic effect. CBD is still relatively new to the market, so studies are still being conducted on its effectiveness. However, it has gained a huge following in recent years due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety properties.
Full spectrum hemp oil is popular for pain relief and the relief it brings is so great because it helps with the physical and mental symptoms—treating both the inflammation and the anxiety or stress brought on by the physical discomfort.
If you would like to order either of the two full spectrum hemp oil products Dr. Johnson recommends, please call our office at 585-731-8840. Curcumin is the main curcuminoid found in turmeric. Curcumin is a potent anti-inflammation polyphenol supplement. For inflammatory relief, the Arthritis Foundation recommends a patient take 400-600 milligrams of turmeric capsules three times per day.
"It aids in the management of oxidative and inflammatory conditions, metabolic syndrome, arthritis, anxiety, and hyperlipidemia. It may also help in the management of exercise-induced inflammation and muscle soreness, thus enhancing recovery and performance in active people. In addition, a relatively low dose of the complex can provide health benefits for people that do not have diagnosed health conditions. Most of these benefits can be attributed to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Ingesting curcumin by itself does not lead to the associated health benefits due to its poor bioavailability, which appears to be primarily due to poor absorption, rapid metabolism, and rapid elimination. There are several components that can increase bioavailability." 1
One issue with curcumin; it is difficult to get into the body, in other words it has poor bioavailability. Since curcumin is not easily absorbed through the digestive tract, any method to enhance improvement absorption and assimilation is preferred. To get around the poor bioavailability of curcurmin we recommend a liquid emulsified form of turmeric. Medical research studies show curcumins are much more highly absorbed into the cells of the body with . T
