Picture having enough energy for a walk with someone you love, an afternoon with your grandchildren, or a trip you have been looking forward to. Those everyday experiences give healthy aging its meaning. The goal is to preserve your ability to participate in life.
At Johnson Chiropractic Neurology & Nutrition, I encourage you to look beyond your birthday when thinking about your health. Aging brings biological changes, but persistent fatigue or discomfort deserves investigation rather than automatic acceptance.
Tru Niagen® offers a researched approach to supporting NAD+, a molecule your cells need. Its connection with inflammation deserves attention, along with an honest explanation of what research has and has not established.
Key Takeaways: Tru Niagen and Healthy Aging
- Tru Niagen supplies nicotinamide riboside, a nutrient your body uses to make NAD+, which supports essential cellular processes.
- Human trials support increased blood NAD+ with nicotinamide riboside, but higher levels do not automatically translate into better health outcomes.
- Emerging human research suggests effects on some inflammatory markers; broad claims about reversing inflammaging still go beyond the evidence.
- Johnson Chiropractic Neurology & Nutrition provides individualized nutritional guidance that considers your symptoms, health history, and broader healthy-aging goals.
- Sleep, nourishing food, appropriate movement, and individualized care remain foundations for healthy aging, with supplementation considered as one supporting tool.

What Is Inflammaging, and Why Does It Matter?
Inflammaging refers to chronic, low-grade inflammation associated with aging. Unlike the temporary inflammatory response that helps you recover from an injury, this ongoing activity can contribute to an environment that strains tissues and cellular function over time.
Think of an appropriate inflammatory response as a repair crew that arrives, completes its work, and leaves. With persistent inflammation, parts of that crew remain active longer than they should. The analogy is simplified, but it explains why the duration and regulation of inflammation matter.
Inflammaging is a research concept, not a diagnosis you can make from feeling tired or stiff. Those symptoms can have many causes. I encourage you to ask what is contributing to your symptoms rather than assume age explains everything.
How Does Tru Niagen Support NAD+ Levels?
Tru Niagen contains nicotinamide riboside, or NR, a form of vitamin B3 that your body can use to produce nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, called NAD+. NAD+ participates in energy metabolism and supports enzymes involved in cellular maintenance and DNA repair.

NAD+ availability can change with aging and metabolic stress, although patterns differ across tissues and individuals. A blood measurement does not reveal the complete picture inside every organ.
The manufacturer’s Tru Niagen collection describes products designed for NAD+ support. The clinically meaningful distinction is between supporting a cellular molecule and proving that a supplement improves how you feel or how long you live.
What Have Human Studies Demonstrated About Nicotinamide Riboside (NR)?
Human trials demonstrate that NR supplementation can increase blood NAD+. A 2019 randomized, placebo-controlled trial of NIAGEN found increases across the studied doses, with no significant difference in reported adverse events compared with placebo [1].
That is a useful, measurable benefit. It does not establish that every person will experience improved energy, sharper thinking, or slower aging. Short-term tolerability also does not settle every question about long-term use or individual suitability.
What Does Research Suggest About NR and Inflammation?
Some human studies suggest NR may influence inflammatory markers. A small 2019 trial in older men found reductions in circulating inflammatory cytokines, while measured muscle mitochondrial bioenergetics did not improve [2].
A 2024 randomized trial in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease found a reduction in a specific airway inflammatory marker. Another measured marker, plasma IL-6, remained unchanged [3]. Findings in this clinical population cannot automatically be applied to generally healthy adults.
These studies make the inflammation connection worth investigating. They do not prove that Tru Niagen® 500 mg broadly reverses inflammaging, prevents age-related conditions, or extends human lifespan. Research on NR also should not be treated as proof for every finished product or serving.
additional research connecting nad+ and inflammation
Research suggests that NAD+ depletion and inflammation may reinforce one another. A 2018 research abstract described experiments in mouse immune cells in which inflammatory stimulation reduced NAD+ levels. The authors proposed that lower NAD+ availability may, in turn, contribute to age-related inflammation. This offers a possible mechanism, rather than proof that NAD+ depletion is the sole cause of inflammaging in people [4].
Human findings are encouraging but preliminary. A 2022 conference abstract reviewing five clinical trials of oral nicotinamide riboside reported improvements in some inflammatory measures, including IL-6 levels or the activity of certain inflammation-related genes. Other findings were inconsistent, and the trials differed in participants, doses, and duration. The authors, who were affiliated with ChromaDex, called for additional research to clarify which inflammatory measures respond to NR and in whom [5].
Laboratory research also helps explain why this connection is being investigated. A study in cultured mouse liver cells found that NR reduced selected inflammatory markers and increased some markers related to mitochondria, the cells’ energy-producing structures. These findings support further investigation, but they do not establish that taking Tru Niagen reduces liver inflammation or reverses inflammaging in humans [6].
Aging Is Inevitable; Some Health Risks Are Modifiable
Aging cannot be stopped, but some contributors to declining health can be addressed. Your nutrition, activity, sleep, and care for existing health concerns offer practical places to begin.
Healthspan means the portion of life spent in good health and function. More happy, healthy days is a meaningful goal: enough capacity to enjoy relationships, hobbies, and ordinary activities. A supplement cannot promise those days, but a thoughtful plan can focus on supporting the abilities you value.
At Johnson Chiropractic Neurology & Nutrition, individualized nutritional guidance helps you connect daily choices with your broader health goals. A whole-person approach keeps a supplement from becoming a substitute for understanding your situation.
My Inflammaging Protection Protocol: A Whole-Person Approach
The goal of healthy aging is to keep participating in the moments you value, from a walk with someone you love to time with your grandchildren. My Inflammaging Protection protocol brings together two supplements I personally use: Tru Niagen for NAD+ support and fatty15™ Advanced Formula Extra Strength, which supplies the fatty acid C15:0.

C15:0 is being studied for its potential role in supporting cell membrane resilience and metabolic health. Its broader benefits are still being investigated. This is a different area of research from the NAD+ studies discussed here; neither those studies nor my personal use establishes that the combination reverses aging or reliably reduces inflammation.
You can explore my Inflammaging Protection protocol in my Fullscript dispensary. I view supplementation as one part of a plan that also includes nourishing food, appropriate movement, restorative sleep, and attention to ongoing health concerns. Before starting, let’s review your health history and current supplements or prescribed therapies to determine what fits your needs.
Where Does Tru Niagen Fit in Your Healthy-Aging Plan?
I personally take Tru Niagen® Pro 500 mg daily. I also recommend Tru Niagen® 500 mg as an option to consider within an individualized healthy-aging plan. It is available in my office and through my Fullscript dispensary.

My recommendation should be considered in the context of your health history and other supplements or prescribed therapies. Discuss suitability and serving instructions with your healthcare professional, particularly if you have ongoing health concerns or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Higher servings are not automatically better for your personal goals. Increasing blood NAD+ is one outcome; improving everyday function is a different question. Keep your expectations specific and realistic.
Practical Steps for More Healthy, Enjoyable Days
- Build meals around nourishing foods. Include vegetables, adequate protein, fiber, and appropriate sources of unsaturated fats. My article on olive oil explores one dietary component.
- Preserve your ability to move. Choose activity suited to your current capacity and progress gradually. Maintaining mobility helps you keep participating in activities you enjoy.
- Make sleep a priority. Protect a consistent sleep opportunity and seek evaluation for ongoing sleep problems rather than relying on supplements to compensate.
- Investigate persistent changes. New fatigue, declining endurance, or ongoing discomfort deserves professional attention. Avoid attributing every change to aging.
- Use supplementation thoughtfully. Review the full plan with your clinician and track meaningful goals, such as participation in daily activities, rather than assuming biological changes guarantee results.
Common Questions About Tru Niagen and Healthy Aging
Can Tru Niagen Reverse Aging?
No human evidence establishes that Tru Niagen reverses aging or extends lifespan. NR’s ability to increase NAD+ is better supported than broad anti-aging promises. I view NAD+ support as one potential component of a plan, not a way to turn back the clock.
Will Tru Niagen Reduce My Inflammaging?
NR research suggests effects on some inflammatory markers, but an individual reduction in inflammaging cannot be promised. Studies differ in population, dose, and outcomes. Your symptoms and health history should guide a broader evaluation rather than an assumption that one supplement addresses the cause.
Is Tru Niagen® 500 mg Appropriate for Everyone?
No serving is universally appropriate. My 500 mg recommendation is an option for individualized consideration, not a guarantee of benefit or suitability. Review the product label and discuss your health history, prescribed therapies, and other supplements with your healthcare professional before starting.
Supporting More Healthy Days Starts With Better Questions
