Eating clean, getting more exercise, and practicing self-care are all helpful when it comes to enhancing wellness. But it may surprise you to know that your mattress can play a critical role in your health. The way we sleep impacts the way we feel, physically and mentally, and it all begins with our beds. Here are four fundamental ways your mattress can impact your overall health.

Your Mattress Can Cause Pain

If you have been struggling with chronic pain in your neck, back, or joints, your mattress may be at least partly to blame. There are many underlying conditions that can result in chronic pain, from a past injury to a chronic condition. But what all chronic pain conditions have in common is that sleeping on a worn-out mattress can make the pain worse. Even if you do not suffer from chronic pain, a bad mattress can cause aches and stiffness in your back and joints. Finding a mattress that provides proper support can go a long way in resolving pain symptoms. While you are shopping, consider updating your pillows to provide good neck support as well. We recommend you contact Ergo Sleep Centers in Royal Oak for the best sleep options.

Your Mattress Can Make You Sick

It may come as a surprise to know that your mattress can make you sick. If you've had your mattress for five or more years, it’s likely become a home for dust mites, bacteria, and other microorganisms that can cause health issues -- no matter how clean you keep your house or bedroom. At some point, cleaning your mattress won't do the trick, and it's simply time to buy a new one. Buying a mattress can be overwhelming, so be sure to research online reviews of mattresses built for your sleeping style and needs. To further protect yourself from allergens and bacteria, consider picking up hypoallergenic bedding to keep your new mattress in top shape and to make it easier for you to breathe in your sleep.

Your Mattress Can Make You Tired

Mattresses are made primarily for sleep, but sleeping on an old or unsupportive mattress can actually cause you to feel more tired in the mornings. Figuring out if a new mattress can cure your insomnia can be tricky, but it is a fairly good start. If you feel physically uncomfortable at night and find yourself tossing and turning because of it, a new bed could provide relief. Some mattresses can cause you to overheat as well, which tends to interrupt sleep and cause you to feel less rested in the morning. You should also take steps to improve your overall sleep environment even if you do pick up a new mattress. Making your bedroom into a sleep haven is key to preventing sleep issues. Keep it dark with blackout curtains and cool with fans, and use noise machines to block out any sounds that may be interfering with your sleep. You may want to quantify your quality of sleep and to do so, consider using the S+ from ResMedThe S+ by ResMed is the world’s first non-contact sleep tracking system that helps you analyse and improve your sleep from the very first night.

Your Mattress Can Lead to Mental Health Issues

The connection between mental health and your mattress may not be obvious. However, it is definitely a relationship you want to evaluate. If your mattress is leading to a chronic lack of sleep, you may find yourself less capable of dealing with stress. Research has shown that those who sleep less tend to feel more stressed out when it comes to completing tense tasks and dealing with issues in their day-to-day life. Loss of sleep may also lead to depression and anxiety, as well as a worsening of mental health symptoms associated with schizophrenia. Replacing a mattress could make for better mental health and better overall wellness.

Boosting your health and happiness could be as simple as getting a new bed. By evaluating how well your mattress is supporting you, you can take a critical step in preventing chronic pain, illness, and mental health issues.

What to do if you still can't sleep after Changing Your Mattress and Pillow

I've dealt with a number of patients who still cannot sleep even after buying a new mattress and/or pillow. It is so frustrating to  toss and turn all night long, only to FINALLY fall asleep just before the alarm goes off! Sleepless nights can be tough. They make your days miserable, leaving you crabby, tired, and unfocused. Discover how a specialized type of neurofeedback called ALPHA/THETA TRAINING can restore peace and make insomnia a thing of the past. This natural neurofeedback process works like a magic switch inside the brain to gently calm areas responsible for all of that negative self-talk.

Michigan_Brain_Health_LOGO_Horizontal-600By teaching the brain to become more balanced and flexible it becomes much easier to transition to sleep. Our patients love it and so will you. Results often come quickly and last for years, if not a lifetime.
