5 Ways in Which Cannabis Helps with Your Migraine

Among the various kinds of pain that we suffer, migraine is one of the most excruciating ones. Migraine pain is a neurological discomfort manifested through intense headaches, nausea, breathing difficulties, numbness, and occasional loss of physical balance. People of all ages are susceptible to migraines, and prescription drugs do very little to heal this debilitating condition. Cannabis is one non-conventional medication that has now shown enough proof that it can counter the symptoms of migraine. The major cannabinoids present in Cannabis, CBD in particular, can ease the pain and discomforting symptoms of migraines, such as nausea, muscle spasms, etc.

The conditions that may lead to migraine:

Migraine is a complex physical anomaly and has several possible causes behind it, such as:

  • Mental and physical stress, over a long period, may cause migraines. Excessive stress produces some chemicals in our brain, which indirectly leads to migraines.
  • Alcohol, nitrates, and similar substances cause a high percentage of all migraines.
  • A weak immunity system, in combination with a sickening sensory atmosphere and troublesome weather, can also lead to migraine headaches.

Cannabinoids, like CBD, is an excellent remedy for significant symptoms of migraines, and it specializes in treating various kinds of pain. Here are five ways in which cannabis saves you from migraines:

1.   Cannabis controls migraine pain:

Studies suggest that cannabis derivatives have both short term and long term positive impacts on severe headaches as well as bouts of migraine. CBD oil is one of the cannabis concentrates that takes care of several kinds of pain, including that of migraines. The oil extracted from the major cannabinoid, CBD, is very helpful for managing not only migraine pain but also the muscle and joint pain that often accompanies and worsens migraine attacks. CBD oil relaxes the muscles and also provides adequate nutrition to your bones so that they remain in a healthy state. CBD oil is non-psychoactive and can be consumed in a variety of manners, such as through direct oral ingestion, external application as a lotion, or using in dishes.

2.   Cannabis activates TRPV1 and Serotonin receptors for migraine relief:

Cannabis cannabinoids like THC and CBD, and cannabinoids produced in the body, such as anandamide, activate CB1 and CB2 receptors in the Endocannabinoid System to reduce migraine pain. CBD also lessens nerve pain through the activation of 5HT1A, a serotonin receptor.

Anandamide and CBD have the ability to bind to receptors like TRPV1 that are associated with inflammatory pain. Upon activation, such receptors release CGRP, which enhances blood flow, thus soothing the nerves and reducing the severity of migraine headaches.

Some synthetic cannabinoids also obstruct glutamate receptors that are responsible for glutamate overactivation, a process that harms our natural mobility, vision, and speech before a migraine attack.

3.   Cannabis manages inflammation and increases immunity:

The ECS or Endocannabinoid System maintains and balances the critical processes of our body by interacting with various organs and internal systems. The Endocannabinoid System is also responsible for controlling inflammation associated with the migraines. Since migraines manifest all their impacts through inflammation, controlling inflammation is crucial in neutralizing migraines. Besides migraines, inflammation also occurs in muscles, blood veins, and the gut, which only worsen your migraine attack.

CBD is a natural anti-inflammatory substance. It has rich anti-inflammatory qualities which are beneficial in regulating our immune system by controlling inflammation. Studies indicate that cannabinoids such as CBD can modulate our Endocannabinoid System and, thus, manage several kinds of inflammation within the body, helping in keeping migraines at bay. Moreover, Hemp-derived CBD provides key nutrients to our body, such as protein, vitamins, essential fatty acids, iron, etc., which enhances our overall immunity.

4.   Cannabis provides robust Gastrointestinal health:

If we observe the symptoms of both gut disorders and migraines, we can see that there is a link between them. Symptoms such as vomiting, dizziness, nausea, and physical weakness are common to both gastrointestinal disorders and migraine headaches. Research suggests that people with common gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhoea, reflux, and constipation have a greater chance of getting headaches. Hence, good gastrointestinal health will aid you in reducing the impact of migraines.

Cannabis profiles like CBD oil, CBD pills, and gummies are extremely helpful for digestion. CBD treats stomach bloating and helps with issues related to the GI tract. By alleviating issues such as vomiting and nausea, cannabis relieves headaches that can intensify into intolerable migraine pain.

5.   Cannabis makes one relaxed and helps to sleep:

According to studies, migraine and other kinds of headaches are related to other comorbidities like mood disorders, anxiety, and epilepsy. Hence, it is crucial to look after mental health and lifestyle issues that can indirectly invite migraines.

It is a fact that CBD assists in treating problems like anxiety, stress, and insomnia. Since CBD can naturally induce sleep, it helps in maintaining our body’s essential hormonal balance. CBD also helps in controlling tension that is harmful to our overall health. By making us calmer, CBD makes sure that the triggers of migraine attacks are out of the picture.

Cannabis Dosage:

Cannabis dosage largely depends on the concerned product and the levels of CBD and THC in it. THC is psychoactive, and you must ensure you are fit for it. CBD, on the other hand, is non-psychoactive and does not have any such restraints. Interestingly, cannabis products that have both these cannabinoids may bring the best results for you by virtue of the entourage effect in which other cannabinoids work synergistically with THC to enhance the overall impact of cannabis. Beginners should choose a CBD-dominant cannabis product that has the THC: CBD ratio of around 1: 10. If you feel comfortable, you can always alter the dose accordingly.

Final words:

With the current spread of a progressive vision regarding cannabis, the unique advantages of cannabis consumption are gradually coming forth in public. Cannabis’s impacts on health, coupled with the minimal side effects, present it as an attractive proposition for patients who undergo any pain, migraines included. The absence of legal obstructions has also gone in favor of cannabis, as it has led to greater accessibility for people who can select their favorite cannabis solutions from a host of products. All of that being said, you must understand your health issues well before you opt for a cannabis solution. Always consult a medical practitioner if you face any complications.
