Risks of THC from Marijuana vs the Benefits of CBD from Hemp

Posted by Dr. Karl R.O.S. Johnson, DC on Mon, Oct 02, 2017

Proponents of marijuana legalization promote the benefits of its use. Research does demonstrate benefits from some of the ingredients in marijuana, but it appears that most of the benefits can be found in the non-psychoactive component known as CBD which is found in the hemp plant. It's important to know both marijuana and hemp come from the plant species Cannabis Sativa L.

"Cannabis is one of humanity’s oldest crops, with records of use dating to 6000 years before present. Possibly because of its early origins, and due to restrictions on scientific inquiry brought about by drug policy, the evolutionary and domestication history of Cannabis remains poorly understoodDrug types of Cannabis (marijuana), which contain high amounts of the psychoactive cannabinoid-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), are used for medical purposes and as a recreational drug. Hemp types are grown for the production of seed and fibre, and contain low amounts of THC. Two species or gene pools (C. sativa and C. indica) are widely used in describing the pedigree or appearance of cultivated Cannabis plants." [1]

In my opinion, THC is the ingredient that marijuana users most covet because of the psychoactive effects it has, including "feeling high".  Unfortunately, THC has many negative effects including short or long term psychosis in susceptible individuals. Why risk having psychotic episodes when one can derive so many medicinal benefit from CBD from hemp as explained in information below (see https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3736954/ for more detailed information)

Groundbreaking News: Low Fat Diets Increase Risk of Death, Study Says

Posted by Dr. Karl R.O.S. Johnson, DC on Tue, Sep 19, 2017

This old school and precarious advice came about because it was far too easy for us to believe this simple and misleading equation: fat intake = fat on the body.

But we now know this fat fable isn't true.

Our bodies are much more complex than this. We need fat to create hormones, maintain healthy cell membranes, and have excellent neurological function.

Notice I didn't say decent or good neurological function, and that's because fat has been shown to crush neurological disorders.

I want to shout it from the roof tops: FAT IS GOOD!

A study which was released August 29, 2017 examined the dietary habits of 135,000 people and came to the resounding conclusion that… drum roll please…

September is a month founded on transition. Summer turns to fall, free time is consumed by
school, days get shorter and nights get longer. Even if you weren’t one of the lucky ones who had summer off because of a career in education, summer living is always less stressful. How a "Leaky Brain" Raises Your Risk of Dementia

How a "Leaky Brain" Raises Your Risk of Dementia

It has been a hundred years since a Nobel Prize winner discovered the thin barrier that surrounds and protects the brain. Since then, we’ve learned this mesh of tightly joined cells, called the blood-brain barrier, is highly selective in a healthy person. It allows the transport of compounds back and forth through an intricate transport system while keeping out most everything else in the blood stream that can damage the brain. This includes heavy metals, toxic proteins, pathogens, and red and white blood cells.

Accelerated aging + Inflammation = Leaky Brain

Now, scientists have discovered that brain degeneration weakens the blood-brain barrier and causes it to “spring leaks.”  This is especially true in the hippocampus, the area of the brain associated with learning and memory. This discovery adds to the growing evidence that diseases of aging such as dementia and Alzheimer’s are sometimes linked to what functional medicine practitioners call a “leaky brain.”

Osteoporosis: How Fast Are You Losing Bone?

Posted by Dr. Karl R.O.S. Johnson, DC on Tue, Aug 29, 2017

OSTEOPOROSIS: HOW FAST ARE YOU LOSING BONE?

Osteoporosis is reaching an epidemic status. It leads to 1.5 million fractures per year.

The traditional way one is evaluated for osteoporosis is the standard Bone Density Test. Although important to have done, this is a static test and "only" provides information on the amount of bone that has already been lost.

Unfortunately it does not provide data on the rate of bone loss.

Wouldn't it be wise to know how fast you are losing bone?

Wouldn't it be of great value to know if the treatment you are doing is slowing down the rate of bone loss?

The Benefits of High Cholesterol

People with high cholesterol live the longest

This statement seems so incredible that it takes a long time to clear one´s brainwashed mind to fully understand its importance.

Yet the fact that people with high cholesterol live the longest emerges clearly from many scientific papers.

Consider the finding of Dr. Harlan Krumholz of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Yale University, who reported in 1994 that old people with low cholesterol died twice as often from a heart attack as did old people with a high cholesterol.

Why Some Knee Problems Persist After Full or Partial Replacement

Posted by Dr. Karl R.O.S. Johnson, DC on Tue, Jul 25, 2017

I am often asked if anything can be done for knee problems that persist after a full or partial knee replacement.

Unfortunately, its fairly common to continue having some knee issues after knee replacment (knee arthroplasty). Some of the reported knee challenges include pain, lack of stability or the feeling your knee can't be trusted. If you search using Google with this search string "knee pain after knee replacement pubmed", you will find several research papers discussing the topic.

Recent Study Shows High Incidence of Chronic Knee Replacement Pain

A recent study looked at the percentage of patients with chronic knee pain after knee replacement at a minimum of one year following surgery in 272 patients. A questionnaire was sent to them at between 12 and 16 months following their surgery. Of the 272 patients who responded, 107 patients (nearly 40%) reported that they still had persistent pain at one-plus year following surgery. The median average pain rating (using the 0-10 numeric pain scale) was 3 out of 10, with pain reported as high as 5 out of 10. While you might think 5 out of 10, which is moderate pain, would be an improvement in knee pain after knee replacement, it isn’t that much different from the pain level most patients would describe prior to undergoing the knee replacement.  This amount of pain can keep you from being able to do certain things like roller skate with the kids, or going on trips that require a lot of walking or climbing stairs, for example. Persistent pain is also commonly described as aching, tender, and tiring, which certainly would give someone pause when considering to participate is a variety of activies.
